This course is a 4 hour course and can be packaged with RIIWHS202E – ENTER AND WORK IN CONFINED SPACES .

This course covers the theory and practical application of Gas Test Atmospheres. Upon successful completion, applicants will be awarded a Statement of Attainment.

On successful completion, participants will be able to:

  • Determine gas testing regime/sampling pattern required
  • Identify hazards from possible atmosphere containments
  • Use gas testing equipment to test gas as required
  • Interpret and report readings
  • Monitor gas on an ongoing basis as required
  • Take required actions if readings are unacceptable
  • Maintain equipment
  • Knowledge of common chemical asphyxiants
  • Knowledge of explosive range, upper and lower explosive limits
  • Knowledge of conditions under which atmospheres become hazardous

All learners must be able to read and comprehend English to a level that will enable them to safely perform duties as specified in the competency standard. PreStart Safety & Training recognises that some learners may require more support to meet the requirements of the training course. We will endeavour to meet these needs with regards to; language, literacy and numeracy skills. Learners are encouraged, prior to commencing the course and where applicable, to complete an PreStart Safety & Training LLN analysis, which will assist the Trainer/Assessor to interpret individual skill level and manage this from the onset. Learners must complete and return a pre-course assessment (as supplied by PreStart Safety & Training).

All successful applicants will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment: MSMWHS217 – Gas test atmospheres.
