Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) HLTAID009

Provide Basic Emergency Life Support HLTAID010

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

The unit applies to all persons who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

On successful completion, participants will be able to:

  • Assess an emergency situation
  • Maintain the airway, breathing and circulation of an unconscious casualty
  • Provide and administer first aid for minor wounds and apply infection control procedures
  • Manage a casualty suffering from shock, near drowning, external bleeding and extremes of temperature
  • Manage a casualty with chest/ head/ abdominal injuries
  • Administer first aid for burns, electric shock, eye and soft tissue injuries
  • Administer first aid for venomous bites, stings and allergic reaction
  • Provided first aid for spinal injuries and fractures
  • Determine principles for movement of sick and injured including first aid recording requirements
  • Knowledge of the legal and social responsibilities for a first aider
  • Identify, assess and minimise immediate hazards to health and safety of self and others
  • Assess the casualty and recognise the need for CPR
  • Seek assistance from emergency response services
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation in accordance with ARC guidelines
  • Operate automated external defibrillator (AED) according to manufacturer’s instructions
  • Accurately convey incident details to emergency response services
  • Report details of incident to workplace supervisor as appropriate

All learners must be able to read and comprehend English to a level that will enable them to safely perform duties as specified in the competency standard. PreStart Safety & Training recognises that some learners may require more support to meet the requirements of the training course. We will endeavour to meet these needs with regards to; language, literacy and numeracy skills. Learners are encouraged, prior to commencing the course and where applicable, to complete an PreStart Safety & Training LLN analysis, which will assist the Trainer/Assessor to interpret individual skill level and manage this from the onset. Learners must complete and return a pre-course assessment (as supplied by PreStart Safety & Training).

All successful applicants will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment: HLTAID011 – Provide first aid and HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
